Fly High Norwegian Girls MTV Hotseat for the Month of May 2000 Who could have predicted that the meeting of tow five-year old Norwegian girls would blossom into one of today's hottest pop partnerships? Not even M2M could. Marit Larsen, 16 and Marion Raven, 15, first met when they were kids back in their homeown of Oslo, Norway. Even as children, they clicked instantly. As they grew older, they developed a fliar for performing, and started putting up impromptu performances for their families and friends. They also appeared in musical theatre productions like "The Sound Of Music", "Annie" and "The Wizard Oz". As luck would have it, things started falling into place for them. Marit and Marion would soon form a band and land themselves a record deal. A "Hubba Bubba" album comprising Norwegian children's ditties was released in 1994. The album was well-received and led to a Spillemanspriset < the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy Award> nomination for 'Best Children's Album'. This was a great confidence booster for the girls. "We had a lot of fun and were convinced that this was what we wanted to do with our lives!" they said. When the girls returned to the studio, they wanted to record something other than children's songs. Determined to show the world what their mettle was made of, they adopted the more aldut moniker, "M2M" and began honing their musical skills. That was not all. The girls began to write songs in English to reach a wider audience. "Some people think we're too young to write songs", says Marit. "I can understand. But that's good, too, because it makes us all the more excited to prove ourselves." Soon after, the girls signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and made their way onto the "Pokemon" soundtrack with their first single, "Don't Say You Love Me". The single became an instant hit, paving the way to stardom for M2M. Working with producers who had helmed the workds of the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys, M2M released their first pop album, "Shades of Purple", which was filled to the brim with potential chart-toppers. Touring the world with their signature acoustic performances, M2M have converted many a skeptical critic. And why not? After all, M2M has talents that other pop bands could only wish for. >> MTVAsia.com
